Let's start with something really important. The way you see yourself shapes the way you live.

It affects how you take care of yourself, how much joy you experience, how you interact with others, and how you handle stress. The way you see yourself isn’t just a mindset thing. It plays out in your everyday life.

If deep down you feel unworthy, you’ll probably treat yourself that way. You might neglect yourself, or you might head in the other direction and push yourself too hard, almost like you’re trying to prove something. But when you begin to understand and believe that you are truly loved and valuable, the way you treat yourself begins to change. You start caring for yourself differently, not from guilt or pressure, but from a confidence in your worth.

It impacts your joy.

Comparison is such a thief because it trains your mind to scan for what you lack. You start noticing everything you’re not, everything you don’t have, everything you haven’t done. But when you believe you were intentionally created, your focus changes. You begin noticing evidence of purpose, growth, and goodness in your life. Your mind starts collecting proof that you are enough, not falling short, and your joy begins to grow.

It also shows up in your relationships.

When you don’t love yourself, you often look to others to fill that gap. You may seek constant reassurance. You might question whether people really care about you. Boundaries may feel scary because you’re afraid someone might pull away if you set them. But when you know you’re already valued, you stop grasping for reassurance, you can communicate your needs without fear, and you show up fully present instead of in protection mode.

It even changes how you handle challenges. Whether it’s a mistake you made or a hard season you didn’t choose, loving yourself changes the way you respond. Instead of turning inward with criticism or panic, you can pause and remind yourself that hard things are part of being human, not proof that you’re failing. You learn what you can, let go of what you can’t control, and move forward, giving yourself grace, remembering that the moment does not define you.

And spiritually, it matters more than we often realize.

When you know who (and whose) you are, the accusations of the enemy lose their grip. Just like when Jesus was tempted by Satan and answered attacks with truth, you can answer lies with what God says about you. Scripture reminds us, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). When your identity is secure, those negative voices no longer get the final say.

Henry Nouwen said it so well: “The greatest trap in life is self-rejection.” I think that’s because when we reject ourselves, we close ourselves off from the truth God is offering us. But when you stop believing the lies about yourself, you create space for God’s truth to take root, and you begin changing the way you live.

Tomorrow, we’re going to take this one step deeper. If the way we see ourselves shapes the way we live, then it’s worth asking… what shaped the way we see ourselves in the first place? We’ll talk about where those beliefs began, and then in the following days, we will get into what we can do to move towards self-love.
