Day 5: Letting God’s Love Redefine How You See Yourself

Scripture tells us, “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

That means self-love, in its healthiest form, doesn’t start with trying harder to think better thoughts about yourself. It starts with receiving God’s love. Fully. Completely. Without earning it.

So many of us are trying to love ourselves while still secretly questioning:

Am I enough for God?

Is He disappointed in me?

Did He make a mistake with me?

The enemy whispers the same lies over and over until they feel true. That’s why the song The Truth is so powerful (our movement song from yesterday). It captures that moment when the lies get loud, and then truth breaks in. The chorus reminds us that we are our Father’s child, made in the image of a perfect King, truly loved by a good God. Not tolerated. Not barely accepted. Loved. (click here for The Truth lyrics)

And in You Say (the other song in yesterday’s movement video), we’re reminded that even when we feel weak, unworthy, or like we don’t belong, God’s voice speaks something different. He says we are loved. He says we are His. The only voice that ultimately defines you is His. (click here for "You Say" lyrics)

Freedom begins when you decide which voice you will believe.

Here’s the truth:

God does not make mistakes.

He did not accidentally create you with your personality, your gifts, your body, or your story. You were created on purpose, for a purpose. And trusting that truth is part of loving yourself. If we reject who we are, we are subtly saying God got it wrong.

Just so you know, believing you’re loved and walking into each day from that truth will not be something any of us ever do perfectly. We are all a work in progress, and the only time we will be who He created us to be 100 percent of the time is when we take our first breath in heaven.

I know I mess up or miss the best that God has for me each day, but in my heart I deeply long for what Philippians 3:12 says:

“I keep working toward the day when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved me for and wants me to be.”

I’m not talking about striving or earning. I’m talking about moving toward who He made me to be because I know ultimate joy and a full life are found there. What about you? Do you believe His plans for you are better than anything you could come up with?

When we have the heart posture each day of wanting to be who He created us to be, nothing more and definitely nothing less, it doesn’t just impact you. It impacts the whole Body of Christ.

Basil Pennington said:

“We need to come to know who we truly are, that uniquely beautiful person that God has made us to be, and to have the courage to live accordingly. If we do not live that and express it in our lives, it will never be expressed in this world for the glory of God and the up-building of the whole Body of Christ.”

I am not a puzzle person, but my sister loves puzzles, and I can picture them laid out on our dining room table. She wouldn’t quit until the last piece was put into place. It would make her a bit crazy if she finished it and one piece was missing.

Can you picture this? A beautifully designed puzzle with one missing piece.

The image is incomplete. Something is off. It doesn’t fully reflect the beauty it was designed to show.

That missing piece is you when you shrink back.

When you believe the lies.

When you refuse to step into your true identity.

The Body of Christ is designed with you in it. If you don’t live fully loved, fully surrendered, fully you, something is missing. I don’t say this to put pressure on you or make you feel guilt, but to excite you to dive deeper into loving yourself and stepping into who God created you to be.

Today, as you move to the song Chosen by Sidewalk Prophets, don’t just exercise your body.

Let truth move through you. Let these lyrics take hold of your heart:

You’re not worthless, you’re precious

You’re not left out, you’re wanted

You’re not invisible, with your shining soul

Love has spoken, you are chosen

When the lyrics declare that you are loved and chosen, let your heart practice believing it. When they remind you that you are strong and courageous, let your body physically step into that truth.

The starting point to loving yourself is not self-confidence.

It’s God-confidence.

It’s believing that you are already fully loved by a good Father.

And from that place, you can finally begin to live with joy and freedom.

The more you believe His love for you, the more fully you’ll step into the life you were created to live.
