How Faith Can Help with Food
God created food for us to enjoy and nourish our bodies, and He made it in its most natural form for a reason. Eating whole, natural foods aligns with His design, and it can help us feel better physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Food is not just fuel; it’s a gift from God, meant to be savored and enjoyed.
But sometimes, when we’re struggling with cravings or emotional eating, it’s easy to forget the deeper purpose of food. This is where faith comes in. One of my dear friends, Eileen, has a beautiful story that reminds me of this. When she was struggling with cravings, instead of giving in, she’d pick up her Bible and read a single Psalm or Proverb. Just one chapter was enough to feed her spiritually and shift her focus from the cravings.
For example:
Psalm 34:8 reads: “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” and Proverbs 3:5 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
Verses like these reminded her that God is with her and for her, helping her rise above the struggle.
She shared this story at a retreat, alongside other ways she invited God in to help, like going for a walk to pray and refocus. These small habits have allowed her to build a healthier relationship with food while leaning on God for strength.
As followers of Jesus, we’re called to share the good news, and one of the best ways to do this is around the table. Jesus often shared meals with His disciples, breaking bread together as a way to build community and deepen relationships.
In Luke 24:30-31, it says, “When He was at the table with them, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him.”
The beauty of gathering around the table is really a sacred act. It’s an opportunity to share not only a meal but God’s love and truth with those around us. So, let's honor Him in how we nourish ourselves and others, turning every meal into a moment of worship and connection. Let's keep feeding our bodies and our souls with what truly sustains us.
