Let’s start by appreciating how miraculous the human spine is! God designed it as an elegantly balanced system that provides foundational support for our entire body. The spine aligns our neck, chest, lower back, and pelvis, ensuring that our neck, body, and legs are positioned properly. It is truly the backbone of our body, literally and figuratively. Every move we make involves the spine, so it’s critical to understand how to maintain a healthy back. By doing so, we can maximize our mobility and do all the things we need and love to do - pain-free.

So, What Causes Back Pain?

The spine is a stack of 33 vertebrae connected and cushioned by cartilage and connective tissue. Like other joints in the body, these parts can experience inflammation and pain. Pain in the back can be caused by injury, weak core muscles, poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, prolonged sitting or certain diseases.

Eighty percent of the population suffers from some type of chronic back pain and the numbers are on the rise. Two-thirds of adults age 40+ show disc deterioration and by age 60, 90% are affected, making it a common issue that many will face in their lifetime. The good news is that with proper care, strengthening, and conditioning it is possible to minimize or even eliminate back aches and pains!

As we go through this challenge, I would like for you to think about why you decided to participate. If you had less back pain, how would it affect your quality of life? What activities you would like to do but can’t because of the pain? Knowing your “why” is what will motivate you to stay committed and consistent.
