Speak Kindly to Yourself - Written Message
For the remaining 7 days of this program, we’ll be diving into 7 ways to better love ourselves-and in turn, love God and others more fully. Loving yourself isn’t selfish-it’s the foundation for healthy relationships and an essential step to living the life God intends for us.
Each day, we’ll explore one specific way to love yourself well, offering practical steps and reflections that you can start applying right away. By embracing these habits, I believe you’ll build a deeper understanding of your worth and create lasting, positive changes in your life.
The first habit we’ll discuss is speaking kindly to yourself.
Reflection:
Our thoughts have a powerful impact on our physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Both the words we speak and the ones we think hold immense power - they influence how we view ourselves and how we interact with the world. In Positive Intelligence, Shirzad Chamine highlights how our self-talk can either be our best friend or our worst enemy. Studies show that when our thoughts are supportive and positive at least 80% of the time, we experience more joy and fulfillment in life.
This concept aligns with what the Bible teaches us in Proverbs 18:21: "The tongue has the power of life and death." Our words can either build us up or tear us down.
It’s amazing to me how science backs this up. As neurosurgeon Dr. Lee Warren shared on Susie Larson Live, “When you think different thoughts, your brain does different things.” He explained that our thoughts influence our brain’s chemical responses, which shape our emotions and behaviors. This is exactly what Paul teaches in Philippians 4-when we feel anxious or troubled, we are called to think better thoughts… to focus on what is good, hopeful, and true.
When we speak to ourselves with kindness, patience, and encouragement, we nurture our self-worth. But when we allow negative self-talk to dominate, it can hold us back. Today, I challenge you to focus on using words that uplift both yourself and others. The way you speak to yourself sets the tone for your day and, ultimately, your life.
